What is your favourite part of the Christmas Season?

My favourite part of the Christmas season is knowing in my heart that a saviour was born for me! Then eating a lot and doing shopping for my friends and family. It is a true season full of joy, christmas songs & giving to those who don’t have.

Do you have any personal or family traditions on Christmas day? Tell us about them…

Christmas is always a day full of joy. Eating a lot of food is the main tradition of the day. We always make sure we have a unique meal over Christmas which we discuss altogether as a family before preparing. In the evening when we were young we would have a Christmas dance, like a competition and a winner was awarded by our dad. We also decorate the whole home and wear special Christmas day outfits!

Tell us about the planning and preparation for Christmas…

It would start from the previous day with decorating the whole home with a traditional tree. We call it a Christmas tree but we would a cut branch from a tree called “obukomera”. It was always a special moment looking for that tree all over the village, bringing it home to decorate with balloons, sweets, toilet papers, ribbon & family photos.

Then on Christmas day we would wake up very early in the morning. Mum would always be the first one awake preparing food, beginning with breakfast and other dishes. At around 9am we would put on our Christmas outfits and then go to church up-to 11am. After returning we would then continue with the  cooking and at exactly  1 pm eating starts!! Since we cook a lot of food we eat for a few hours. Then our parents used to tell us stories all evening when the dancing and Christmas drinks began! We would dance up to around 10pm at night and then retire to bed!

What is your favourite part of the Christmas Season?

My favorite part of Christmas is eating and the happy mood in which the whole country will be in! Christmas songs are being played everywhere!

Do you have any personal or family traditions on Christmas day? Tell us about them…

On Christmas we always prepare chicken (luwombo) which is prepared in banana leaves. It’s  so lovely and very tasty. This is just the pre dinner meal!
Secondly receiving Christmas gifts! Our family tradition is that running up to Christmas we sit as a family and write names down of all members, then everyone chooses randomly and then we know who to buy a Christmas gift for! Then on Christmas day everyone exchanges and receives their gifts with a lot of joy!

Tell us about the planning and preparation for Christmas…

It starts a day before with final shopping of groceries and on Christmas day we wake up very early and move to our parents home to start preparing the main meal while others are preparing breakfast. Some of the family go to church and others stay cooking.  Later we have lunch and afterwards share gifts. Then we go and visit friends.

My favourite part of the Christmas season is going for prayers and coming together excitedly to eat as a family. There is something so special about Christmas food because the way we eat together on Christmas day is as if we have never eaten before!

We start by waking up at 5am. This is when the cooking begins since we have to cook a lot of food! By 9am we are usually finished with cooking. We leave it on the fire to keep warm. We then dress up and go to church which ends by 12 noon. Around 12:30 pm we begin eating our feast! Afterwards we all share funny stories and then later we watch TV or go visiting friends!
